Your MLA, Your MP: What They Do

Understanding the Role of Your Elected Representatives

Canada has two major levels of elected political representatives — your MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) at the provincial level, and your MP (Member of Parliament) at the federal level. Each has different responsibilities, powers, and spheres of influence. Knowing the difference helps you take your concerns to the right person — and get results.

Section One

What Your MLA Does (Provincial)

Your MLA represents your constituency in the Manitoba Legislature.

Responsibilities:

  • Debating and voting on provincial laws

  • Representing constituent concerns in the Legislature

  • Helping residents with issues like health care access, education, and provincial roads

  • Questioning the government and reviewing policies in committees

  • Sometimes serving as a Cabinet Minister if their party is in power

Areas They Influence:

  • Health care delivery

  • Public education

  • Infrastructure (highways, provincial parks)

  • Child and family services

  • Manitoba Hydro, rural development, and more

Section Two

What Your MP Does (Federal)

Your MP represents your constituency in the House of Commons in Ottawa.

Responsibilities:

  • Debating and voting on national legislation

  • Shaping federal policy on issues like immigration, defence, and the economy

  • Representing local concerns at the federal level

  • Serving on parliamentary committees

  • Helping constituents with matters like EI, immigration, and federal benefits

Areas They Influence:

  • Criminal law and the RCMP

  • Federal taxation and spending

  • Indigenous affairs

  • National defense and foreign relations

  • National infrastructure and trade

Section Three

How to Communicate With Your Reps

Engaging with your MLA or MP is easier than most people think — and it works.

Tips for Effective Contact:

  • Be respectful, clear, and concise

  • Include your name, address, and riding

  • Reference a specific issue, bill, or concern

  • Request a response or meeting

  • Follow up if needed

Most elected officials take constituent messages seriously — especially when they’re well-informed and timely.

Section Four

Why It Matters to You

  • Too often, concerns are directed to the wrong level of government, leading to delays and frustration. When you understand who handles what, you can:

  • Save time by contacting the right representative

  • Hold the correct people accountable

  • Build real relationships with officials who represent your voice

Section Five

Final Takeaway

Your MLA and MP both work for you — but their roles are different. When you know who to call and what to say, you’re not just voting. You’re participating in democracy.
